Reverse Osmosis vs. Carbon Filters: What’s the Difference?

Choosing the right water filtration system can be confusing—especially when you're trying to decide between Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems and Carbon Filters. Both technologies are popular, effective, and widely used—but they solve different problems. Here’s what you need to know to make the right choice for your home.

How Carbon Filters Work

Carbon filters use activated carbon to trap contaminants as water passes through. They're excellent at improving taste and removing:

  • Chlorine and chloramines
  • Bad odours
  • Organic chemicals
  • Some pesticides and herbicides

These filters are commonly found in pitcher filters, faucet filters, and under-sink filtration systems.

How Reverse Osmosis Works

RO systems use a multi-stage process to push water through a semipermeable membrane. This removes a wide range of contaminants, including:

  • Lead, arsenic, fluoride
  • Nitrates and sulfates
  • Heavy metals
  • Bacteria and viruses (in combination with UV)
  • Dissolved salts and minerals

RO systems are typically installed under the sink and include a storage tank and multiple filter stages.

Comparison: Reverse Osmosis vs. Carbon Filters

Feature Carbon Filters Reverse Osmosis Systems
Removes Chlorine & Odours ✅ Excellent ✅ Excellent (multi-stage)
Removes Heavy Metals ❌ Limited ✅ Very Effective
Removes Dissolved Minerals ❌ No ✅ Yes
Improves Taste ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
Removes Bacteria & Viruses ❌ No (unless combined with UV) ✅ In combination with UV stage
Cost 💲 Lower upfront & maintenance 💲💲 Higher upfront cost
Maintenance 🔄 Easy – replace cartridge 🔄 Moderate – multiple filters to change

Which One Do You Need?

If your main concern is chlorine taste or odour, a carbon filter is likely enough.

If you want comprehensive filtration, including fluoride and heavy metals, RO is the way to go.

Many homes benefit from a combination of both—a whole-home carbon filter plus an under-sink RO system for drinking water.
